Full Description: Tenure: Freehold
Situation and Description Ideford is a small village whose existence can be traced back to the Domesday Book in 1087. The eastern boundary was a Celtic track between the Exe and the Teign estuaries. The parish was given to Nicholas the “Head Crossbowman” in recognition of his part in the Battle of Hastings and since then had a rather chequered history.
To the west of the village is Ideford Arch which was built in 1810 when the route of the Exeter to Newton Abbot turnpike road was altered and was carried across the (older) Chudleigh to Bishopsteignton Road (which linked the two great houses of Lindridge and Ugbrooke) and is one of the earliest examples of one road over passing another.
The village boasts a small and charming public house, the Royal Oak, which dates back to the 16th or 17th century. A huge old oak used to stand beside the pub until 1974 which, the story goes, may have been Charles I's hiding place, (although there is better evidence for William of Orange's advance on Exeter up Haldon lane, a medieval track which is still the parish boundary). Some of the houses survive from the seventeenth century and there has been little expansion of the village in recent years so Ideford remains a quiet and peaceful backwater in this busy world.
Just to the north of the village and easily accessible by various paths and tracks from the village is Ideford Common, a large triangle of lowland heath which is an SSSI and from which there are far-reaching views towards the moors and the coast. It is therefore not surprising that the village has two riding schools.
The village has its own garage and the market town of Newton Abbot is about 5 miles distant to the south with the catherdral city of Exeter approximately 12 miles away to the north. Hayes Orchard is situated down a small lane leading to the 15th century church. Hayes is Norman-French for "enclosed lands" and the rear garden backs onto the fields of Hayes Orchard.
The house itself was built in approximately 1990 and has a generous garden and would make a great family home.
